Quality of Life Dept. transforming traffic signal boxes into public artwork

Artwork being installed on traffic signal box

Intersections in the City of Panama City are becoming a little more creative. The City’s Quality of Life Department is transforming select traffic signal and utility boxes into public artwork.

Beginning this week, vinyl wraps featuring artwork from local and national artists are being installed on seven boxes in the St. Andrews area. Wraps will also be installed on ten boxes in Downtown Panama City in conjunction with the FLLuxe Arts Festival in late March.

The Department held a Call to Artists for artwork and received more than 100 submissions from local and national artists. The City’s Murals Committee and St. Andrews Waterfront Partnership assisted the Department in selecting artwork that is unique to the respective locations.

The project utilizes a public art application to address community blight and enhance the visual landscape. The wraps prevent graffiti thanks to a paint-repelling vinyl, are weather-durable and last up to ten years.
